A road that no one has stepped on yet
Firefly hand technology to find and pursue

Do you know the technique of pottery called "firefly hand"? It refers to expressing a floating pattern by filling an openwork base with transparent glaze and firing it, which has roots in China in the Ming dynasty.

Hiroshi Taruta says that the difficult part of firefly hands is that "well, okay" is not allowed. Firefly hands, which are made by turning a potter's wheel to scrape the molded magnetic womb and make holes, also dare to reduce the strength of the baked product. Mr. Taruta worked on this technique, which requires meticulous attention in each process, with the risk of cracking during molding and baking. twenty three It was when I was old.

"Line" firefly

Most of the openwork carvings of fireflies are "round holes", but Mr. Taruta chose "lines". Since the opening before applying the glaze becomes large, the difficulty of making baked goods will increase dramatically, but the light leaking from the "line" is like the light from the clouds, the light of the club, and it is my favorite light. , Talk to.

Because the difficulty is high, there are not many people working on the line firefly. It was born from the desire to "combine and pursue what you like" and the determination that "you cannot survive unless you do what people do not do". ..

Mr. Taruta's work using firefly hands

To the road that no one has stepped on yet

Mr. Taruta was born and raised in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. The motivation for going on the path of grilled food was when I chose a high school course (remembering that time, "I chose it by elimination"). I liked drawing, so I decided to go to the ceramic department of Seto Ceramics High School (currently Aichi Prefectural Seto Technical High School), which had a history of more than 100 years since its foundation. from home 1 There are many commuters during the half-hour commuting time, and Mr. Taruta sees the tired office worker and gradually strengthens his feelings of "I don't want to be hired by people" and "I want to do something myself".

After graduating from high school 2 After completing an annual major (ceramic art), 2007 Studied under the potter Masanori Hatano in the year. Nowadays, Mr. Taruta says, "I want to do everything by myself," but he recalls, "I was very happy to be a disciple." afternoon 3 It seems that he often talked with his master during the break, and at one point he was called. "It's good to dig into one." The word. At that time, I wanted to create various things by combining woodworking and metalworking, and I was searching for my own expression, but now I look back on what I was told.

After that, Mr. Taruta's turning point was that he was busy exhibiting at public exhibitions, working at a ceramics high school, and so on. 2015 A year Ten It was an experience in Europe where I traveled around for months. While visiting a pottery school in Southern Germany and potters from West Germany, Northern Germany, and Sweden to observe European pottery, the work of his own firefly, who was said to have a "European atmosphere" in Japan, is in Europe. Then, it is evaluated as "Japanese-like". From this experience If you dig into the firefly, it will be your own expression that no one has stepped into yet. I was convinced.

It is important to create zero → Ichi, which does things that only you can do.

Mr. Taruta who speaks with all his might. The work I'm making now has a lot of tableware and there are "rules" so it's still easy to make. In the future, he wants to challenge such unconventional art. The work "Fluctuation", which won the Excellence Award at the "1st Japanese Cultural Grand Prix" held this year, shows the direction.

about 20 The work taken out of the kiln after firing for hours is the height 15cm It is a work that was born miraculously while it is larger than a normal work and the risk of cracking is proportional to the size.

Mr. Taruta talks about this in the production.

I would like to create softness by incorporating the curve of the firefly.

The exhibited work is a work in which light and curves, and the blue color of the blue-white porcelain glaze create a soft atmosphere, while the tension of the firefly hands and carving by the lines is moderately mixed so that it becomes a comfortable fluctuation in 1 / f fluctuation. became.

In other words, the "finding" that the master said is to master. Mr. Taruta

When you master it, you can embody beauty.
To master it, you don't have time to reach for various things and you need to concentrate.

Is called.

Production scenery in the atelier

The technique of firefly hands that you feel from the bottom of your heart that you like it and polish it with everything. When I asked Mr. Taruta, "What are you aiming for on this road?", He answered, "The works will be exhibited at the museum," but I feel that the day is not far away.
